Lyme-disease

Region: Jena

Disease profile

TBE - almost everyone knows this by now: This is this viral disease that is transmitted by ticks and against which you can be vaccinated - early summer meningo encephalitis.

But Borreliosis?

Lyme disease is also an infectious disease transmitted by ticks. It is common and still often overlooked. Its pathogens are spiral-shaped bacteria - Borrelia. Lyme disease is common on continents of the Northern Hemisphere: in America, Europe and Asia.

Not every tick is infected.

However, if signs of a Borrelia infection appear after a tick bite, there is a good chance of recovery if treated in time. However, if the disease is not recognized and treated in the early stage (stage I), the pathogens may spread in the body, resulting in stage II and III Lyme disease. These stages of Lyme disease are characterized by diversity of symptomatology; the eyes,  nervous system, joints, heart, and skin, among others, may be affected. The disease is often very stressful for the patient, diagnosis and therapy are often not easy. A vaccination against the European Borrelia strains does not yet exist.

Goals and tasks

  • Exchange of experience about the course of the disease and the success of therapy
  • Expanding one's own knowledge and striving for current  knowledge.

Public relations:

  • Education: among other things, how do I reduce the risk of infection? How do I behave in case of a tick bite? What are the signs of a Borrelia infection? When do I have to consult a doctor?
  • Passing on information material
  • Advice and mediation of counseling

We are open to those affected and at risk. Participation in support group meetings does not obviate the need for medical treatment.
